This is the fifth of eleven observations I shared during my part in the conversation about Pen-to-Publication (see blog entry for 24 February 2012).
Veteren editor and self-proclaimed champion of the “backlist”, Jason Epstein and his collaborators create the EBM, described as “the ATM of books, it automatically prints, binds, and trims perfect-bound, library-quality paperback books with full-color covers, on demand and in a few minutes.”
In November 2010, The American Book Center in Amsterdam installed the first, and only, EBM on the European continent. ABC exclaims on its website, “The EBM is not just for books that already exist: Give us a digital copy of your own formatted text and we’ll turn it into a book! Imagine submitting your manuscript to a publisher already in book form. Or how about having your dissertation, family cookbook, memoirs or poems made into a book for in you in less time than takes to go grab a coffee! There’s no minimum—we can make one copy of your book or a hundred!”
Current EBM locations: 25 throughout the USA; 10 in Canada; 2 in London; 2 in the Netherlands, 3 in Alexandria; 3 in Abu Dhabi; 1 in Beijing; 2 in Tokyo; 1 in Manila, and 2 in Melbourne.
